Metal From the Dirt: Inside the Navajo Reservation's DIY Heavy-Metal Scene
"There's a lot of bands, heavy-metal bands, on the Navajo reservation. And for some reason this music, this subculture, seems to permeate with the youth," says Jerold Cecil, manager of Arizona act I Dont Konform. "What Rez Metal is — 'rez' is sort of an inside word for 'reservation.' Our brand of metal is different than anybody else … it's blowing up." For one week this summer the Everything Is Stories creative team traveled to the Southwest United States, and Navajo Nation territory, to document the originators of the DIY Rez Metal scene, and the bands that are now carrying the torch, including I Dont Konform, Mutilated Tyrant and Born of Winter. From a generator-powered show in the Arizona desert to a band practicing in a traditional Navajo dwelling called a Hogan, this story — told by Navajo ("Diné") bands and individuals involved in the scene — explores the creation of Rez Metal in the Eighties, the juxtaposition of old and new Navajo traditions and the link between heavy metal and native pride. Directed by Clarke Tolton Produced by Everything Is Stories for Revolver Everything Is Stories is Mike Martinez, Tyler Wray Director of Photography Tyler Haft Edited by Vincent Staropoli Sound Mixer George Drake, Jr. Executive Producers Enrique Abeyta, Brandon Geist, Jimmy Hubbard, Skip Williamson, Brad Angle, Mike Martinez, Tyler Wray, Clarke Tolton Production Coordinator Sammi Chichester Music: I Dont Konform, Mutilated Tyrant, Domenic Palermo, J.S. Rumble Documentary Part One
American music is loved throughout the world. Our next story reviews a new documentary feature that traces the origins of rock, jazz, and the blues. The film shows how Native American Indian music was blended with African music throughout American history. It is the missing chapter of how American music evolved. VOA’s Carolyn Turner has the story.

Meet The Native American Punk Rockers Bringing Music Back To Reservations | AJ+
Twin sisters Dani and Dezy are using punk rock music to combat suicide and substance abuse among Native American youth. For Dani and Dezy, music was a safe haven and form of expression while growing up on the Fort Berthold Reservation as part of the Hidatsa Waterbuster Clan. Now they've formed the punk rock duo the Miracle Dolls. Based in southern California, the Miracle Dolls travel across the country performing shows on reservations and donating guitars to schools through the Native American Youth Music Program. Their goal is to bring music education programs back into Native American schools. Nataanii Means- Warrior
In today's society we're quick to use the word 'Warrior', but in a lot of Indigenous People's language across Turtle Island, that word is translated into many different definitions. In this video I chose to travel the country to different events and locations to depict our modern day warriors, in everything they do, because all of us are fighting to survive in one way or another. Which brings it back to why in our languages, the definition isn't limited to one. Directed & Edited by Nataanii Means Director of Photography- Terrance Clifford Co-Director of Photography- Angel Mills Shot at various locations over the course of one year. Natives Lives Matter Rally- Rapid City, SD LNI- Rapid City, SD Porcupine, SD Wounded Knee, SD Navajo Walkers- Blanco, CO Canyon de Chelly- Chinle, AZ Santo Domingo Pueblo, NM Santa Fe, NM
